Resources for Parents
Welcome, Parents!
Thank you for supporting your child’s journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. At SaskBJJ, we believe that a positive, respectful environment helps children grow in confidence, discipline, and resilience. We’re here to help you navigate training, tournaments, and everything in between.
Membership Requirements for Youth Athletes
To compete in SaskBJJ-sanctioned events, your child must have a current SaskBJJ membership.
This ensures:
- Tournament eligibility
- Participant insurance coverage
- Access to athlete grants and programs
Tournament Information
Tournaments are organized using Smoothcomp, a platform where parents can:
- Register their children
- Track brackets, match times, and live results
- Receive real-time updates
What to expect:
- Competitors are grouped by age, weight, and skill
- Events are family-friendly and organized for safety and fairness
- Spectators are welcome in designated areas
- Parents are encouraged to support positively and avoid sideline coaching
Know the Rules: IBJJF Rulebook
SaskBJJ follows the IBJJF ruleset at all tournaments. While coaches and athletes should review the full rules, parents are encouraged to understand the basics of how scoring, submissions, and match outcomes work.
Read the IBJJF Rulebook
This helps you better support your athlete and understand tournament decisions and match flow.
Respect in Sport for Parents (Optional)
We encourage parents of youth athletes to complete the Respect in Sport for Parents course. This program promotes respectful communication and helps parents understand their important role in youth development through sport.
Supporting Your Athlete
You don’t need to be a martial artist to be a great BJJ parent. Here’s how to help:
- Praise effort and commitment over results
- Stay calm and supportive at events
- Trust your child’s coach to guide them on the mats
- Celebrate learning, not just winning
If you have questions, your child’s coach is a great first point of contact. You can also email contact@saskbjj.ca for federation-related inquiries.
