SaskBJJ offers ongoing educational opportunities for athletes, coaches, officials, and volunteers. Our events include technical seminars, referee certification, and strategy workshops to help participants excel both on and off the mat.
Referee Course with Tony Isaacs
Tony Isaacs, Director of Tournaments for the Canadian Jiu-Jitsu Association (CJA) and Ontario Jiu-Jitsu Association (OJA), leads this seminar annually. With decades of refereeing experience at national and international competitions, Tony is recognized for his deep knowledge of the IBJJF ruleset and his commitment to developing officials across Canada.
Tony’s background includes:

Oversight of referee training and tournament standards for both CJA and OJA

Extensive officiating experience at national tournaments and IBJJF-style events.

Mentorship of referees across multiple provinces, with a focus on consistency and professionalism.
This course typically takes place around the time of the SaskBJJ Provincial Championships and is open to all members interested in officiating or understanding competition rules more deeply.

Andre Galvão
Team Atos / Multiple-Time World Champion
Andre Galvão is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend and co-founder of Atos Jiu-Jitsu, one of the world’s most successful competition teams. He is a 6-time IBJJF World Champion, ADCC Absolute and Superfight Champion, and a former MMA fighter. Known for his explosive takedowns and pressure passing, Andre’s seminar focused on elite-level guard passing and the mindset needed for success at the highest levels of competition.
Philippe Andrew
Alliance Jiu-Jitsu / Elite Heavyweight Competitor
Philippe Andrew is a black belt under Fabio Gurgel and an IBJJF medalist at Worlds, Pans, and Europeans. Known for his agility and technical precision, he brings a modern approach to guard and top position strategies. His seminar emphasized movement-based guard passing and transitional attacks suitable for both gi and no-gi practitioners.
Luiza Monteiro
Atos / 2-Time IBJJF Black Belt World Champion
Luiza Monteiro is one of the most accomplished female competitors in the sport. With titles at Worlds, Pans, and Brasileiros, she is recognized for her aggressive top game, technical guard, and competitive experience. Luiza’s seminar focused on attacking chains from guard and passing techniques that blend pressure with movement, while also offering insights into mindset and training as a female athlete at the elite level.
Gustavo Batista
Atos / IBJJF World and Pan American Champion
Gustavo “Braguinha” Batista is one of the top middle-heavyweight competitors in the world. His precision, control, and posture-based passing have made him a standout at the international level. Gustavo’s seminar covered high-percentage pressure passing, back takes, and methods for maintaining dominant positions with technical efficiency.
Richie “Boogieman” Martinez
10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu / ADCC and EBI Veteran
Richie Martinez is a black belt under Eddie Bravo and a key figure in the 10th Planet system. A former breakdancer turned grappler, he is known for his creative submissions and unorthodox no-gi style. His seminar featured rubber guard concepts, the truck position, and transition-based submission systems designed to elevate the no-gi game for students of all levels.
Robert Drysdale
IBJJF and ADCC Champion / Historian and Author
Robert Drysdale is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, ADCC Absolute Champion, and IBJJF World Champion. He is also a respected coach, historian, and author of Opening Closed Guard, a comprehensive look at the roots of Jiu-Jitsu. Drysdale’s seminar offered deep insights into both technical development and the evolution of BJJ, blending practical instruction with a broader historical perspective. Geo “Freakazoid” Martinez
10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu / ADCC & EBI Competitor
Geo Martinez, brother of Richie Martinez, is also a 10th Planet black belt under Eddie Bravo and a standout in the global submission grappling scene. Known for his flexibility, speed, and flow-based no-gi style, Geo has competed in ADCC, EBI, and other high-profile events. His seminar focused on dynamic guard play, leg lock entries, and creative transitions, giving students practical tools for sharpening their competition and no-gi game.
